COTTON

is probably one of the most popular raw materials. It is made from the seed hairs of the cotton bush. The quality is determined by the staple length, colour, purity and sheen. The country of origin is also an important criterion in the selection process. Wappen only uses cottons from choice, high quality provenances.

BLUE-DENIM

The classic blue jeans fabric. It is made of blue warp threads and a white filler, so the surface looks mainly blue and the underside mainly white.

NON-IRON

Cellulose-binding artificial resins are added to fabrics made of and with cellulose fibres to give them an easy-care finish. This makes the fabric permanently shrink-resistant, so the length and width never change, and the fabric becomes smooth after washing without having to be ironed.

CHAMBRAY

Cotton fabric with the character of a faux-uni; fashionable successor to and summery variant of denim.

COLORED DENIM

The first jeans were made of blue denim, which was followed by black and then ecru. Now jeans are available in a wide range of colours. True Coloured Denim is yarn-dyed in warp and/or weft, but can also be produced by over-dying.

COTOLÉ

Fine fabrics with narrow, usually cord-like lengthwise ribbing.

CRASH

Pre-creased (crushed) finely-yarned fabrics (natural silk or synthetic fibres). The surface of the fabric contains uneven creases and lines, which are pressed into the fabric and fixed.

DENIM

This is the name of the fabric from which genuine jeans are made. It is a strong cotton fabric that is made with a twilled weave. Denim used to be called "Serge de Nimes" after the town where it was originally produced.

FACONNÉ

Plain coloured fabrics with tiny patterns that are raised from the basic surface by changes in the weave.

FAUX-UNIS

Fabrics with such a tiny pattern, either as the result of the weave or of the colour, that at first sight they appear to be plain.

FIL-Á-FIL

Fabric with small, stepped pattern that is the result of alternating light and dark threads.

FLANNEL

General term for a fabric that is brushed on one or both sides.

GARMENT WASHED

General term for all processes of washing the colour out of ready-to-wear items of clothing.

Opposite: MILL WASHED

In this case, the fabric is washed before sewing. Washing is intended to achieve a used, worn appearance.

JACQUARDS

Fabrics with a large, intricately woven pattern. The patterns are woven into the fabric rather than achieved by using coloured yarns or printing the fabric.

LINEN

is one of the oldest and most durable fabrics, and is made from fibre-rich flax stalks. The higher the quality of the linen, the flatter and lovelier its sheen. The fabric's elegant creased look is due to the fibre, which is completely inelastic. Because it is pleasantly cool to wear, linen is extremely popular in summer.

MERCERIZING

Cotton or synthetic cellulosic fibres are treated with caustic soda so the originally kidney-shaped cross section can be changed under tension. This results in a more lustrous fabric with a better affinity for dye, a soft, voluminous feel, and greater tear resistance.

OXFORD

Coloured woven shirt fabric in cotton, tight basket weave.

POPLIN

Fabric with narrow crosswise ribs, formed by using a very fine, densely set warp yarn and a coarser, more softly turned, looser filling yarn.

EMBROIDERY (-logo)

Serves, like a label, to decorate and facilitate recognition by the user - but is more elegant! Wappen shirts carry the embroidered motif on the front pocket.

STRUCTURED FABRIC

Bulky fabric with a surface-raised pattern; often grainy to the touch.

VISCOSE

like cotton, is made of cellulose, a natural basic material. Its lightness appeals, as does its feel and silk-like appearance. Because it is highly moisture-absorbent, viscose colours are particularly brilliant. It is used alone or in combination with natural or synthetic fibres.

TWO-PLY YARN

Fabric that is created by entwining two single threads together. Very elegant, high quality fabric. Used mainly for exclusive shirts.

HONEYCOMB PIQUÉ

Cotton fabric with a honeycomb appearance. The face cloth "bubbles" up due to floating threads on the underside.
